Our society
is engulfed in entertainment. Almost everyone takes part in some form, or
multiple forms, of entertainment every day. From TV shows to video games to
theatrical performances, and more, people have become obsessed with entertainment.
Many people can’t imagine life without these.
Not all
entertainment is bad, but when a person or culture is so engulfed in it that
they no longer live in reality it can become a big problem. We see this
happening today. Some become so obsessed with different entertainments that
they miss experiencing real life with those around them.
There are
appropriate ways we can enjoy entertainment as a gift from God, but not become
so entangled in it that we waste our lives. And there are certain
“entertainments” that Christians should not take part in if we really want to
be honoring to God.
Some forms
of entertainment can be helpful. They can encourage us to be in awe of the
beauty of God. They can stir our emotions and lift our spirits when we are
down. They can draw people together. They can bring laughter. But entertainment
can be a distraction. It can keep us from focusing on the kingdom of God. It
can take up time that we should be spending in prayer and God’s word. It can
distract us from the relationships around us. It can consume our thoughts,
keeping us from pursuing our God-given purpose.
As a
Christian, some forms of entertainment are just not appropriate. Some things simply must be off limits. We are called to freedom in Christ, but
that is not an excuse to indulge in sinful desires.
One day, I
want to encourage my children to read and learn from literature. I want to
encourage activeness (like hiking, dance, or other activities they may enjoy). But
I will also encourage them to focus on building the kingdom of God and living
for eternity. I don’t want my children to waste all their time on social media or video
games. I will encourage them to pursue the talents and interests God has given
them, but I won’t encourage them to pursue them as an idol or the end all be
all of life.
I personally
enjoy ballet, lyrical dancing, country dancing, baking, and violin. I enjoy
family nights, whether it’s movies or read-a-louds or singing. I think these
things are gifts from God and can be used in such a way that helps us glorify
God and love Him more. But when we start to love and seek these things more
than God, then we know they have become an idol and we must make changes to
start putting God first. We must look at every form of entertainment in light
of eternity: does this truly matter? Is
it beneficial? Is it hindering me/others in our walk with the Lord, or is it
drawing us to Him?
