Rainforest cover a small percentage of the earth's surface, but a big percentage of animals and plants are found in the Rainforest. Rainforest can be found in South America, Alaska, Canada, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. So they are in every continent except Antartica. There are actually two kinds of Rainforest: 1. Tropical (most commonly found) 2.Temperature.
About 1/4 of natural medicines have been found in the Rainforest. In fact many plants used to treat cancer are found in the Rainforest.
The largest Rainforest is the Amazon Rainforest. The second largest is the Congo Basin which is found in Africa.
Rainforest's have 4 layers: The top is the Emergent layer. The tallest trees ( around 200 ft high) reach here. There is sunlight here. Animals in the emergent layer are eagles, monkeys, bats, and butterflies. Next is the canopy layer. It is the main layer of the forest. Many animals live here. This layer forms a roof over the last 2 layers. The next layer is the Understory layer. Very little sunlight reaches this layer. There are lots of animals and insects here. The last layer is the forest floor. It is very dark on the forest floor.
